Shane Watson made his 1st Grade debut vs Eastern Suburbs at Waverley Oval. The first four in the batting order were Shane Watson, Nic Maddinson, Steve Smith & Phil Jaques, while Adam Zampa was also in the team.

12 February 1989

Sutherland won the Poidevin-Gray Shield, defeating Randwick at Caringbah Oval. The team was captained by Tony Clark.

Sutherland 152 (Rodney Davison 48, Darren Holley 35) d. Randwick 94 (Nick Howard 4-22, Darrell Mann 2-22, Nigel Brookes 2-26).

Steve Smith won the Allan Border Medal as Australian Male Player of the Year.

Norm O’Neill was also inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame.

Chris Streater took 8-42 in 5th Grade vs St.George at Tonkin Oval.

Grahame Barry took 6-42 in the first innings in 1st Grade vs Mosman-Middle Harbour at Mosman Oval. He went on to take 4-50 in the second innings the following week to give him match figures of 10-92, as 1sts won outright after bowling Mosman out twice to give them momentum to go on and make the semi-finals.
