Vale Harry Peters AM

It is with deep regret that we advise of the sad passing on Tuesday of Harry Peters. Harry was a life member of the club (elected in 2006) and, along with his wife Carol, our first major sponsor through their seafood business Ocean Monarch Premium Seafoods. They were the major sponsors of the club for 20 years, from 1991-92 until the end of the 2010-11 season. Harry’s generosity in his support of many sporting clubs and charities throughout the Shire has been legendary and we are certainly most grateful to him and Carol for their support over 20 years. He was also a strong supporter of Sutherland Shire Junior Cricket Association (SSJCA) and Southern Districts Rugby Club, among others. Many years ago, he was the driving force behind the financial rescue of the Sylvanvale charity for handicapped people that is still going strong today.

Harry served on our committee for six years, including five as Deputy President under the presidency of Geoff Coleman (1995-00). This period was unquestionably the most successful in the Club’s history, with two first grade premierships, a club championship, two second grade premierships, and premierships in third grade, fourth grade, fifth grade and Poidevin-Gray Shield.  The success during this period arguably owed as much to the off-field presence of Geoff and Harry as the President/Deputy President combination as any other factor. Harry was also instrumental in securing the Sealord sponsorship of the historic match against the touring New Zealand team at Caringbah Oval in January 1998, a memorable day in the Club’s history. In addition to his contribution to SDCC, Harry served for one year as President and 10 years as Senior Vice-President of SSJCA (of which he was also a life member).

Harry was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2005 Queen’s Birthday Honours List, for service to the seafood industry, particularly through addressing the interests of seafood importers and the domestic fishing industry, and as an industry representative to government food regulatory authorities, and to the community.

To Carol, Steve and Michael and their families, we extend our sincere condolences for the loss of their husband, father and grandfather. Harry Peters made a very significant contribution to the community of the Sutherland Shire over many years. We have lost a great man.

We will advise funeral details when they become available.
