Since 1965
It is with deep regret that we advise that Warren Moodie, 1st Grade player #73, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning after a long fight with pulmonary fibrosis. He was only 68. He joined SDCC in 1972-73 with his twin brother Brian (who pre-deceased Warren a number of years ago) as members of the AW Green Shield team. He played two seasons in AWG and then came to grade cricket in 1974-75, when he played most of the season in 4th Grade, scoring 321 runs at 21.4 and taking 22 wickets at 14.6. The annual report stated “Warren Moodie gave a most competent display of batting and spin bowling.”
In 1975-76, he was a member of the 3rd Grade premiership team, scoring 255 runs at 18.2 and taking 30 wickets at 16.2. The following season, he started in 3rds and finished in 2nds. While his stats in 2nds were fairly modest, the captain Bryan Dawson wrote in the annual report: “The highlight for next year will surely be Warren Moodie. Whenever he bowled or batted, it always seemed that he would make the game go our way and his future will only be limited by his desire to reach for bigger things.”
In 1977-78, he debuted in 1sts at the start of the season and finished with 259 runs at 25.9 and 20 wickets at 25.4. He made his highest 1st Grade score of 82 when he moved up to open the batting after Christmas. The captain Alan Campbell wrote in his report: “Warren has shown a dedication that has not only improved his bowling but unearthed his obvious batting ability. He capped a great season by making the Metropolitan side and we hope to see him in the State Colts squad next season.”
In 1978-79, Warren again played 1st Grade, scoring 236 runs at 16.9 as an opener and taking 12 wickets at 36.5. He played in the epic semi-final at Hurstville Oval, scoring 56 in our total of 8/327 dec off 92 overs. The match was drawn when St.George finished day 2 on 8/306 off 105 overs (Warren 1-68), with Saints advancing to the final as the higher-placed team. In 1979-80, he started in 1sts but was dropped to 2nds as he struggled with both bat and ball. He moved to Waverley the following season and played two seasons there, before he gave the game away. In all grades for SDCC, he played 113 matches, scoring 1858 runs at 18.2 and taking 140 wickets at 22.7.
We extend our sincere condolences to Warren wife Sue and his daughters Holly and Melanie and their families. Warren’s funeral will be held in the Founders Room at Wanda Surf Club on Friday 29 May at 1.30pm.
